How do you celebrate?

Looking for new ideas on how to celebrate Easter. We have often done the same things and I am always looking for some new ideas, either on food or something special you do with your family.

We often try to go to the early service for church (haven't done a sunrise service since kids) and then I make brunch for our meal. Usually ham, fruit salad, cinnamon rolls, egg strata, juice and coffee. The kids get a little Easter basket before church, and we do an egg hunt in the afternoon. I have always filled the plastic eggs with non-traditional goodies. Instead of candy and chocolates I use crackers, animal cookies, nuts, dry cereal, money, stickers and trinkets. That way the kids can eat as many as they want. I have also veered away from fluffy fancy dresses. We do get something new, but I make it something they are likely to wear a lot.

So...do share your creative ideas for food and fun.

Since our move, we have started a big brunch with the family in the area. We also have an egg hunt, hay ride and go-karts. It's fun to see the cousins play together, eat too much and laugh!

One of our traditions is to make Easter Story Cookies (meringues) the night before and eat them the next day. If you are not familiar with them, the recipe is on the following site http://www.allhomemadecookies.com/recipes/drop/easterstorycookies.htm
You read Scripture about the crucifixion while you make them and them put them in the oven (OFF) overnight. They are ready in the morning and are hollow inside. While you eat them you read about the resurrection.

I know I am "on spring break" but had to comment on this one since it is a timely matter issue. LOL. :)

Our Easter Bunny gives a BUNNY BONUS in the eggs hidden around the house. The certificate gives the receiver special (non pricey) gifts such as, Select a menu of your choice for a home cooked family meal or Select the game for a family game night and appetizers of your choice or Invite a friend to the local pool for swimming fun. Of course the Bunny always writes it more poetic than what I just did, but you get the point. Little things they can "cash in" throughout the year. Kids love it, and will trade their Bunny Bonus' between the two of them.

Happy Easter!!!

We eat lunch at my mom's house after church. Our tradition is to do the easter egg hunt with our boiled eggs. Once they have all been found we play baseball with them. It makes a wonderful mess. The dog enjoys cleaning it all up. I think this started because there were boy grandkids in the family and what fun for boys. The girls like it too.

This year we were invited to some friends house for a potluck. Everyone is bringing plastic filled eggs to share and doing a big hunt for the kids. Usually I try to make a ham dinner with potatos and rolls...We are enjoying all the commercialism I have to admit, since ususally in Japan Easter will come and go without anything to show for it...no cards, baskets, candy, lilies, special church service, etc. We do hot cross buns Easter morning for a special breakfast and the kids have a small basket filled with goodies- not too much choco though.

I don't have any ideas for you! Your Easter sounds exactly like ours this year! We are having grandparents over for lunch. Our church has a breakfast between the sunrise service and the regular morning worship service. We are going to try to get there early in the morning. This year Abby has a singing solo in the morning service so we are all excited about that! We are adding an egg hunt with friends tomorrow evening, we have not done that in the past. I have been cooking and baking all evening. We will color eggs in the afternoon tomorrow with grandparents.
This morning we went to an egg hunt that Scott was involved in at a church. What ever you do...have a blessed day!

First year without any family around and just starting our own traditions so I enjoyed reading some of these ideas. I especially like your Cris of the "nontraditional" egg fillings because my boys do not understand limits on the candy...and I don't need it either. I look forward to starting more traditions to reinforce the true meaning of Easter as the boys grow. Thanks for sharing everyone. Have a wonderful Easter Cris!!

We seem to do different things every year (beside always going to church). I was just remembering that we went out for breakfast/brunch after church last year and ran into you guys in our cute little town. We were just getting to know you,and now you are far away. Check out my blog for some different fun things we did this year.
