Secret Keeper Girl

Wanted to share about our time at a Secret Keeper Girl event. When I heard that this was coming through town, I made every effort to get there (believe me...that week it was an effort to get there). I really didn't know what to expect (I have had friends that have gone with their girls but still didn't know much about it). So I after I found another mom who was willing to give it a go, we drove to a nearby town, purchased our tickets at the door and found our seats.

The evening was full of lots of tween age girls (8-12) and their mothers all sitting in the pews at a huge church (kind of like a concert). We enjoyed some worship time of singing together, story time, large group games, fashion shows, and wonderful prayer time together. This event is basically a time to connect with your daughter(s) and let them understand that God has made them just who they are. A time to encourage your girls to dress cute but modest (even tips on how to make sure they are modest). A time to embrace who God has made them to be and be thankful for it.

My favorite moment was when the girls were encouraged to think through a trait they have that isn't their favorite (tall, short, curly hair, crooked teeth...what ever they struggle with accepting) and focus on the truth that God made us all uniquely different. Then the girls went down to the stage and picked up a bracelet (handwoven one) and brought it back to the mom's and put it on. It was a beautiful moment to pray with each of my girls about these areas in their own life and pray that they would understand that our confidence comes from being a child of God. We can accept ourselves because this is exactly who he desired us to be. The girls are still each wearing their bracelet and are clinging to that truth.

I look forward to more purposeful connections with my soon to be teen girls and pray that we make choices that encourage them to cling to truth in their own lives. Secret Keeper Girl has a neat website and lots of books that might be worth checking out. HERE

This sounds wonderful. The pull of the world is so strong, especially for a little girl who likes to dance and jump around and draw "fashion design" like Earthgirl. It's good for our girls to be encouraged. --And we mamas could learned a thing or two about accepting ourselves as God created us.

This looks AWESOME, and I would have loved to have participated in something similar when I was growing up. My teenage years would have been much different had I realized the truth of God's love for me and His plans for my future. Is there something similar for boys? I know of a great book for raising boys "The Way of the Wild at Heart", but not of any program for challenging young men to remain pure, respectful, and chivalrous.

My daughter has 2 Secret Keeper books. I didn't even realize that there was a whole ministry attached to them. I will have to keep my eyes open to see if they ever have an event near us. Thanks for sharing this!

What a great idea and a great precurser for both the girls and parents of what's ahead for the teen years. Somehow I think it is harder to go through those "developing independence" years than it used to be. I pray God's wisdom for you as a parent and for continued tender hearts to Him for the girls.
