homemade quilt made from old clothes
I recently made a quilt made from some baby clothes that I had saved from the girls. I wanted to make something on the sewing machine, but I didn't want to buy a bunch of fabric. So, I thought the quilt would work just fine, plus, we are often in need of extra blankets around here.
I will be honest, I didn't measure ANYTHING. I just started cutting and made sure the squares were about the same size. I am a "wing-it" kind of gal. I had no plan, just wanted to be crafty. The squares are about 9 by 9 inches. Lots of different kinds of fabric, sweaters, knit dresses, Chuck's racing t-shirt, old shorts that Tissy wore out before she grew out of them. Each piece brings memories and the girls LOVE IT. They love what it represents.
By the time I was ready to attach it to the backing and batting, I was in no mood to "quilt" it. The fabrics are too varied, so I decided to tie it with yarn. That alone took several evenings in front of the TV watching movies while I worked under the warm snuggy quilt. I can't wait until I can make one for the boys in a few years.

I love the denim pants with the pockets! You could hide a remote in that quilt square!
I love the little back pockets, too. I can imagine your girls telling the boys, "...and this was Tissy's dress when she was 5, and this is from Tally's sweater..."
Love the quilt! I have saved some baby clothes from the girls in hopes of one day making them a baby quilt for their baby!
I love this kind of thing....what great memories! I have a quilt made out of my grandfathers and dads old ties from the 50's and 60's....really cool! Your girls will always cherish this.
Cris,
This is so amazing because I've been wanting to do this same thing for a long time, and just this weekend I got some baby clothes out of the attic and started cutting them up for it!!
My grandmother would do that for us as we were growing up. My mom would save her favorite outfits or ours that we had outgrown and give them to her. My grandmother would cut them up and quilt them. I have the last one she made before she died and it means the world to me. The memories it brings back are very comforting. So much history...
Super Cute!!
What a great idea!!!!
It looks awesome! I have a whole bin of clothes waiting for our "family quilt" as I call it. Good for you to make it. It is always my "someday" project.
your blog makes me wish I could sew or be more crafty!!!
This is a great idea! There are several outfits my little one has already worn out before outgrowing - she's just two now, so I know we'll have more! I'm going to have to steal this idea!!!
