Harvesting my dirt

A few weeks ago I posted on my compost pile (this post). I just wanted to give a little update. After doing some reading on how to compost, I was concerned that I wouldn't have the right ratio of "green" to "brown" material. Or that it wasn't wet enough or warm enough.

Well, I think it worked just fine. I was working in the garden and needed some dirt and was able to harvest my compost pile. How great to have wonderful, FREE dirt. I didn't have to buy a bag of potting soil. All I needed was my shovel and wheelbarrow.

You can tell the pile on the left is not ready yet, but the bin on the right is ready to use. It didn't take that long to decompose. We have only lived in this house 4 months. I just started another bin on the far left with new dead leaves from a tree. Now when we add our kitchen scraps, they will all be dumped in the newest pile.

I just wanted to share that it can be done and it isn't that hard to do. Now that we have a rabbit, we can add her bedding and litter box nesting materials to it too.

So cool! You are lucky to have the rabbit poo! I will paying for rabbit manure this year for my blueberry bushes-it's supposed to be the best thing to fertilize them with.

Really??? I never knew poo was so desirable. Thanks for letting me know. =) LOL

Good job composting! I wonder if it breaks down faster being exposed to light. Your post has inspired me to get out in the yard! Boy, does it need some attention.

This is something that I would enjoy doing if we lived out in the country. I bet your flowerbeds/garden love you!

Neat. As always, you are the Cool farmer chic! I am going to try in in when we are in CA next year. Making dirt sounds fun. A good science lesson for the kids. I bet it would be great soil for my house plants.

Will you post about the worms? Do you attract pests?

I have been composting on my zero-lot line property. I'll have to share more sometime.
