Fresh Milled

A few years ago I started milling my own wheat and making bread for my family. I was looking for an alternative way to get my kids healthy. At the time, Tristen was struggling with sinus infections and we couldn't find anything to get her healthy. I started doing some research and found how important it is to consume fresh milled wheat.

After trying it out on a friends machine, I took the plunge and bought my own mill. It has taken some time to learn what I am doing and make things that are yummy and delicious.

It really doesn't take that long to toss a few cup fulls of wheat berries into the hopper and turn it into flour.

Then I use my Bosch mixer to make the dough. I follow the recipe I got when I ordered my mill from this company.

I have made it a tradition to make pizza every Friday night. When I make my dough I use half of the dough for pizza and the other half for bread or cinnamon rolls.

It has been great to see my family come to really enjoy this type of food. I have expanded my recipes to include spelt pancakes, soft wheat brownies, and stuffed bread (our favorite).

I have seen a huge difference in the health of my family. I really understand what goes into our bodies makes a big difference in how we feel and the sickness we can shake off. Don't get me wrong, we still eat some junk food and other things that most families have in their cupboards. We are far from perfect. But I have become a fresh milled Mama. I will include some pictures later of some of the other things we have made.

My friend who makes me bread (without sugar) uses a bosch. She grinds me oat groats, also.

Cris made some awesome oatmeal peanut butter cookies tonight using frsh-milled whole wheat. MAN they were good! -- After I tried one she confessed to having forgotten the white sugar... honestly, I didn't even miss it! SHe has become a pretty amazing baker... oh yeah, and the "healthy" thing is good too. =)

Hippy Mama...I prefer, Tree Hugger. Or even Granola Girl.=)

Hey...Chuck, you posted. Glad you are back. Honestly forgetting the white sugar was a mistake. Though I did think this batch was great.

Good for you. What a good mama to make her family healthy food. That is great that you have seen such a difference in the girl's health. Do you really think it has been mostly from the fresh milled wheat? How soon are you suppossed to use the wheat after you mill it? The miller looks big though...it would probably take up the my whole tiny kitchen counter....plus I don't know if I can find the whole kernals. Mom would have to bring those over in her suitcase (smile). We DO eat lots of oats though...in granola, cookies and bread, and hot oatmeal. Grandma Hotchkiss would be proud of you Cris!!

The mill is kind of big. I put it in my laundry room when I am not using it. I use the flour right away, but you can freeze it for a few months or put it in the fridge for a few weeks. With in 72 hours after the wheat berry has been milled, it looses all of it's nutrients. That is why you have to bake it or freeze it.

I do think it has made a huge difference in our health. My cholesterol went down 30 pts. Tally's planters warts went away. Those are all things that are health benefits.

For us, it has helped. I know it is a better way to eat for our family.

We've noticed big changes in our health since we've been milling our own wheat too. I haven't been sick in so long, I can't even remember! The same goes for all of us. What a blessing to not have to deal with colds anymore!

Cris, when I read your comment about still eating junkfood sometimes, I had to remember you and your love for Funions!

Sandy isn't going to sell wheat anymore, due to the cost increase. Do you have a reliable source for wheat?

I get it from BreadBeckers. There is a local co-op that orders every few months (4 x a year). If you click on the link on the post it should direct you there. And there is a co-op on the page. I find it to be great. You can email the local co-op coordinator what you want to order and they call you when it is in.

Do you share recipes?? I would love to try the brownies or pb cookies Chuck commented about. I'm making some Ezekial bread this afternoon. We'll see how that tastes.

I tried the Ezekiel bread...it wasn't my favorite. But maybe it was just me.

I will post some recipes soon about some healthy alternatives. Thanks for the idea.

I have that same grain mill! I actually broke it trying to grind soybeans recently and the company sent me a new one-for free! I was so thankful-I can't live without that thing! I have been thinking of posting about it...
